In response to a National Transportation Safety Board safety recommendation for the NWS to provide a primary aviation weather product that specifically addresses both the potential for and the existence of mountain wave activity and the associated aviation weather hazards, the NWS proposes to include mountain wave turbulence in the G-AIRMET product. The Aviation Weather Center (AWC) routinely issues forecasts for moderate turbulence via G-AIRMETs. AWC is planning to add a mountain wave descriptor to the high level and low-level turbulence polygons when mountain waves are associated with the turbulence flight hazard. Additionally, mountain wave attributes will be included in the G-AIRMET USWX XML code. An example of this code is as follows:AWC is planning for operational implementation of mountain wave information in the turbulence G-AIRMETs by April 2026.The FAA- NWS joint-agency working group is aware of the proposed change and concurs with the addition to the turbulence G-AIRMETs.
